SEO Upside Calculator.
Wix and Squarespace sites typically pull 65 to 80 percent the organic search traffic of equivalent owned sites with active SEO. Input your numbers. See the recoverable range over 6 to 12 months.
Back to The VaultYour platform has a real search-traffic ceiling. Wix and Squarespace cap how clean your speed, schema, and template can be. Industry comparisons place these platforms at roughly 65 to 80 percent of what an equivalent custom site with active SEO can pull. The remaining 20 to 35 percent is recoverable, but only off-platform.
This worksheet shows the recoverable range over a 6 to 12 month window with active SEO and content work. If your numbers say the gap is small, the worksheet says so. Conservative estimates throughout.

What the platform actually caps
Six specific reasons Wix and Squarespace lose ground to custom sites with active SEO.
01 · Speed cap
Wix and Squarespace runtimes ship 600KB+ of JavaScript on every page. No matter how aggressively you optimize, you cannot get below the platform's render budget. Slow pages rank lower. Period.
02 · Schema ceiling
Real structured data (FAQ, HowTo, LocalBusiness, Service, AggregateRating) drives 30 to 60 percent of AEO/GEO citation in Google AI Overviews. Wix and Squarespace either skip these schemas entirely or output broken versions. The lift is unreachable on the platform.
03 · Template fingerprint
Google can detect when 200,000 sites share the same template. The pattern reads as low-quality and gets ranked below custom sites. Even if your content is better, the template drags your authority signal.
04 · Limited content surface
Owned sites can publish location pages, service pages, comparison pages, blog posts at any depth. Wix caps content scaling and makes deep architecture painful. More indexable surface area means more ranking opportunities.
05 · Internal linking
Strong internal links boost ranking. Wix's WYSIWYG editor makes systematic internal linking nearly impossible at scale. Owned sites can implement programmatic internal linking that compounds rankings month over month.
06 · No technical fixes available
Real SEO problems require real fixes: meta tag rewrites, canonical control, hreflang, custom redirects, robots.txt edits. Most are locked off on Wix or Squarespace. The platform decides what you are allowed to optimize.
What this calculator actually counts
Conservative numbers from real platform comparisons.
Traffic-multiplier numbers come from aggregated platform-comparison case studies. Lower-bound estimates throughout. Lift assumes 6 to 12 months of active SEO + content work post-migration; technical-only migration lands at the bottom of the range.
Wix
Pulls ~70% of potential
~30 percent gap to a custom site with active SEO. Speed runtime, broken or shallow schema, and the templated-pattern signal are the main drags. Most of the gap closes with platform change + on-page SEO.
Squarespace
Pulls ~75% of potential
Marginally better than Wix. Cleaner code on average but the same template + schema constraints apply. Lift from migration is real but smaller than the Wix case.
WordPress (heavy)
Pulls ~78% of potential
Heavy themes and plugin bloat are the typical issue. A clean WordPress install can hit 90+ percent. The fix is sometimes a theme audit, not a full rebuild.
Webflow
Pulls ~88% of potential
Cleanest of the builders. Better schema control, faster runtime. The gap is small enough that migration math rarely favors leaving Webflow unless the project needs custom backend logic.
Niche sensitivity
Local + ecomm respond strongest
Local services and e-commerce respond strongest to platform fixes (LocalBusiness schema, programmatic city pages, product feeds). B2B and content-heavy sites are less platform-sensitive · their ceiling is content velocity, not the platform.
What is NOT counted
Content velocity + link building
The dominant ranking factor in most niches is content + links, not platform. The platform fix is one lever. If you migrate but do not also publish content and earn links, your lift will be at the bottom of the range. The platform fix removes the ceiling; content + links push you toward it.

What people noticed after they switched
Moved off Wix to a clean custom build with proper schema. 8 months later organic was up about 35 percent · part platform, part the content cadence we set up at the same time. Hard to attribute exactly which lever did what, but the combination paid back.
r/SEO · 2026-04
My agency told me my SEO was "stuck because we needed more blog posts." Hired a different agency that moved me off Squarespace AND set up a real content cadence. Traffic was up 50 percent in 6 months. Probably could not have done it on the platform.
r/marketing · 2026-03
For 18 months I thought my site was bad at SEO. Turned out the platform was capping the technical wins. Custom rebuild plus LocalBusiness schema lifted local-pack appearances by about 30 percent in the first 90 days. Compounded after that with content.
